  • Using a case example a wide range of assessment instruments will be demonstrated to assess children with sexual behavior problems and their parents.

Placement Decisions

  • Decisions regarding placement will be discussed. Can children remain home? What does it take to keep a child within the family? What are the resources in your community? A specific case example will be used to discuss placement issues.

Day Two

  • Using a case example a wide range of assessment instruments will be demonstrated to assess children with sexual behavior problems and their parents.

A Systems Approach to Case Management of Children With Sexual Behavior Problems

  • Which systems should be involved in interventions with children with sexual behavior problems? Many jurisdictions have not as yet developed criteria for when a child will be taken in the juvenile justice or protective services systems. The problems inherent in this dilemma for the systems and the families will be discussed. The function of each system and how that system can be best utilized is discussed

Helping Children with Sexual Behavior Problems- A Guidebook for Professionals and Parents – 2nd edition

  • Each participant will have this booklet, which is a step-by-step approach to intervening with children and their parents.

Therapeutic Goals

  • Nonspecific therapy has not been found to be effective with children with sexual behavior problems and their families. A specific and focused therapy with definable goals is preferred. The theory and practice of this treatment will be discussed. The goals and core issues that need to be covered and the skills the children and parents need to develop will be elaborated.

Specific therapeutic exercises for children with sexual behavior problems, their siblings and parents will be presented.

  • Specific exercises taken from Treatment Exercises For Child Abuse Victims and Children With Sexual Behavior Problems and Child Sexuality Curriculum For Abused Children and Their Parents written by Dr. Johnson will be described.

Transference, Countertransference, Secondary Trauma and Keeping The Healers Healthy

  • Working with this population has its great rewards and its great challenges. Care providers will need to be cognizant of the feelings and issues that arise for the clients and themselves. Suggestions for healthy coping will be provided.
