Consultations To Professionals

Consultations are provided on children who have been sexually abused. These consultations may include but are not limited to: determining the optimal areas to work on in therapy with the child victim and the other family members; getting a better understanding of what is going on in the current therapy; understand the family dynamics; develop an overall treatment plan and case plan for the child and family.

Consultations are available when there are allegations of sexual abuse and assistance is needed to try to determine if abuse has occurred.

Consultations are available when there have been unsubstantiated allegations of sexual abuse in a divorce/custody case and the court orders the child to be reunited with the parent against whom the allegations were made.

Consultations are provided to professionals working with children with sexual behavior problems who are living with their parents, or are in foster care, group homes, or in residential settings. The consultation can be ongoing, single, or multiple sessions. The consultation can be for assessment, treatment planning, or ongoing treatment supervision.

The Assessment Packet (see Publications for Purchase) or some parts of it can be used.

The Assessment Packet contains the following instruments:

  • Child Sexual Behavior Checklist - Second Revision (CSBCL) *
  • Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) - Parent and Teacher Forms *
  • Family Practices Questionnaire I and II
  • Adult's Sexual Behaviors As Children
  • Children's Sexual Behaviors: A Survey
  • Children's Temperament Scale
  • Family Roles, Relationships, Behaviors, and Practices
  • Sentence Completion
  • Dilemmas For Children With Sexual Behavior Concerns
  • Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children *
  • Values, Attitudes, and Feelings Regarding Sex and Sexuality (A) (B) (C)
  • Family Practices Questionnaire VI
  • Family Practices Questionnaire VII
  • Projective Pictures

*The items with asterisks are analyzed using computer programs.

Other instruments will also be used depending on the goals of the evaluation.

If the Assessment Packet is used it is sent to the professional with permission forms for the clients and/or agencies involved to sign authorizing the consultation. The instruments are completed and returned to Dr. Johnson at least five (5) days before the start of the consultation. The items with asterisks are analyzed using computer programs and the results are provided to the professional before the consultation. Normative data is available for most instruments. Other instruments may be added depending on the concerns for the child and family.

In addition to the instruments mentioned above, or in lieu of these instruments, Dr. Johnson will review all relevant psychological testing, therapists' notes, medical reports, court documents, protective service's reports, quarterly reports from out-of-home placements, and any other documents that help illuminate the child and family's current status and history. If there are incident reports on the child's behavior, the ten or twelve most recent ones and all incident reports that relate to sexual behaviors will be reviewed. If Dr. Johnson will not be able to see the child, videos of the child and family are very useful.

During the initial consultation with the professional, the results of the assessment, including a review of the data gathered on the instruments are fully discussed and a case plan is developed.

The professional may want the child's parents or other family members to join in the consultation sessions. In some cases, other professionals, child protective service workers or treatment staff may be included in the consultation sessions to increase their understanding of the child and family's needs and to facilitate developing the most optimal treatment plan. Consultations can be one time or ongoing.

Phone, video or in person consultations are available.
